This paper reports on analyses of a nationally-representative longitudinal study examining predictors of STEM major selection and expectations of future STEM careers. Logistic regression analyses were conducted on an array of course options and demographic variables to determine the significant predictors of future STEM involvement. Courses in computer programming were the only significant predictors among the major science course offerings examined. Sex was a significant predictor of STEM major selection as girls were less likely to choose STEM majors. Sex also significantly predicted expectations for future STEM employment, but girls were more likely to expect that they would pursue a career in STEM. The findings suggest policy shifts supporting access to more programming courses would positively affect STEM career selection.
