Superintendent Reflections on Academic Preparation: A Longitudinal Examination

Tue, April 21, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Superintendent and principal preparation is the pathway for aspiring educational leaders to develop the skills, knowledge, experiences, and dispositions they need to successfully lead school districts. As some research continues to show limited effectiveness and applicability of educational leadership preparation programs, in this paper we discuss perceptions of Kentucky district leaders on their academic preparation over the past decade. We will also examine superintendent perceptions of professor credibility, value of professional development and its topics, and mentorship. Results indicate that more superintendents acquire a doctorate degree than in previous years. Educational district leaders perceive their formal education and professional development as important and useful, although emphasizing its limited applicability to practice.
