Utilizing Intersectionality and Gender Theories to Map Out Gendered Dynamics in the Classroom

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

In this paper, we conducted a review of literature regarding how gender plays out in classroom dynamics. We utilize gender theory and intersectionality as an analytical lens to answer the following questions: (1) What do we know about gendered dynamics among educators and students within schools and classrooms? (2) How is intersectionality used as an analytical tool to make sense of gendered dynamics in the classroom? And (3) What does this literature say about how scholars conceptualize gender within the field of education? By mapping out what it is known about classroom gendered dynamics, we show the gendered landscape of schooling as it intersects with social identifiers (i.e. race and class), as well as social context (i.e. urban, rural, etc.).
