Developing Preservice and In-Service Teachers' Critical Consciousness Through Hip-Hop in Teacher Preparation Programs

Abstract

Research shedding light on the ways in which hip-hop can serve as a conduit to the development of action- and social-justice-oriented critical consciousness has become prevalent among other critical and culturally relevant pedagogical approaches. However, the majority of the training that prepare teachers to enact critical hip-hop pedagogies (CHHP) are situated outside of formal university-based teacher education programs, and questions remain as to how to best prepare educators to utilize hip-hop cultural practices, artifacts and aesthetics towards critical educational ends. Framed by tenets of Critical Hip-Hop Pedagogy and the continuum of cultural competence (Cross, 1989) this paper examines how teacher educators can increase their cultural competence and effectively implement hip-hop pedagogical practices.
