Abstract

Prismatic theory, which builds on on Deleuzian theory, requires layered mapping rather than tracing and re-tracing of prior patterns while maintaining a culturally responsible research approach. Therefore, rather than a purely phenomenological study, this research took a layered approach to exploring Iranian-American mothers’ experiences raising individuals with dis/abilities. This required both a multilayered theoretical approach and a multilayered methodological approach. The first layer utilized Seidman’s phenomenological interviewing guide for qualitative research, the second layer used NVivo to facilitate coding of phrases and finding themes, the third layer examined cultural findings, and the final layer used an arts based approach. Ultimately, these layers influenced how the data was interpreted, while offering a multifaceted, in-depth look at the seven study participants.
