"I Have a Responsibility to My Community": Critical Race Black Feminist Analysis of Outcomes in STEM

Abstract

African American women are underrepresented in many academic fields but particularly so in STEM disciplines. Some scholars assert that more research needs to focus on interrupting bias and producing institutional change. The paper uses Critical Race Black Feminism - which combines Black Feminist Thought and Critical Race Theory - to examine the experiences of African American women who participated in undergraduate research programs. We found that many of the students experienced negative academic climates and experienced microaggressions related to their gender and racial backgrounds. On the other hand, many students also found support structures and stayed committed to their academic goals through their commitment to their communities. We conclude with implications for theory and institutional change.
