Designing for Multiliteracies to Promote the Development of Youth Coding Skills in Library Contexts

Sat, April 18, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This study examines the design and implementation of activities for youth ages 4-13 during a family technology workshop conducted across three library contexts. We framed our designs around multiliteracies to support computational literacy through coding. Libraries are particularly rich environments for multiliteracy work because they offer a broad demographic opportunities to interact with new technologies alongside more traditional literacy tools. We investigated how we can design learning activities that center multiliteracies to engage youth in computational literacy learning in library settings. In the paper, we offer examples of activity designs, what we’ve learned through implementation across several iterations, and how this can inform future designs.
