Although the body of research on Black girls and women, in general, is growing, there is a dearth of studies that exclusively examine the career successes of African American women in a senior level administrative position. This qualitative study explores how Black women in senior leadership positions in 4-year public universities in the United States speak about the characteristics that contribute to their career advancement and success. The study reveals that African American women who hold senior leadership positions in higher education possess excellent academic credentials; are confident in their leadership prowess; they are collaborative, relatable, have the ability to build consensus, and high conceptual skill. Also, they have the personality (Ambitious, strong self-image, cultural self-awareness) necessary for success.
