I Am a First-Generation Doctoral Student: Self-Identity Formation in the Academy

Abstract

Existing definitions of “first-generation” have been applied to students by external agents, leaving out the ways in which first-generation students’ self-identify and glossing over the diversity among this group. This research aims to understand better how doctoral students self-identify as first-generation students and how that identity shapes their experiences.
