Abstract

Our study investigates how sociocultural histories echoed within designed spaces and intersected around issues of justice at a high school in the Mountain West. We draw upon architectural and critical theories to investigate how physical spaces were created by histories, both physical and intangible, and how lived histories spilled into the present as students and teachers inhabited and re-shaped these spaces to fit their learning needs. Understanding how students and teachers shape and are shaped by the spaces in which they learn may lend further insight toward ways to create justice-oriented and culturally sustaining pedagogies (Paris & Alim, 2014) in literacy spaces.
