Assessing Medical Students' Clinical Performance Progress and the Relationship With Step 1 Scores

Abstract

Recently, the US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 has assessed clinical application of knowledge to a greater degree than previously. Medical students not only need to understand the foundations of medical knowledge but to apply the knowledge in clinical scenarios. However, there has been little research into whether early exposure to clinical experiences helps student performance on Step 1. The purposes of this study are twofold: 1) to assess the progress of medical students’ clinical performance longitudinally, and 2) to examine the relationship between the medical students’ clinical performance progress and their USMLE Step-1 scores. Level-Shape models were applied in five domains. The result showed that the starting level of students’ history-taking scores can predict their Step-1 scores.
