Using Substitute Teaching as an Avenue for Empowerment and Curriculum Change

Abstract

Substitute teaching can serve as an additional source of income for pre-service teachers and therefore is an enticing experience. But what do student teachers really think about these experiences and what impact have these experiences had on the development of their personal practical knowledge? This study utilizes critical ethnography to analyze interviews with teachers with varying substitute teaching experience prior to beginning their full-time positions. One major theme arose from substitute teaching prior to full-time teaching experiences: empowerment. Parallels are drawn between participants’ experiences and Elliot Eisner’s work, particularly in regards to the role of schools in providing opportunities for students.
