Putting the Science in Sport Science: Using Kinesiology as a Bridge to Engagement in STEM

Abstract

Improving STEM education in Washington-state schools will likely improve student preparation for STEM related jobs. Heading this call, we created several learning modules that could be utilized in high school science classes. The topics of these modules varied, but the overall goal was twofold: first, we wanted to create modules that increased student interest and engagement in science curricula, having them apply science principles to real-life situations, and two, we wanted to introduce a new pathway into STEM careers – via the discipline of Kinesiology. Results revealed that the intervention was successful in fostering engagement, and further analyses will examine how students perceived these interventions.
