The 5H Holistic Rubric of Best Practices for Whole-Child Educational Reform

Abstract

This paper presents the development of the 5H Holistic Rubric (5HHR) of best practices for whole child educational reform. The 5HHR is designed for school staff to assess their school’s level of implementation of evidenced-based best practices for the following 5H holistic factors, which protect and promote whole child education: Head (cognitive development), Heart (social-emotional care), Hands (safety/security), Health (physical/mental health), and Home (family/community engagement). The 5HHR enables educators to identify and assess holistic factors impacting student achievement and well-being—much lying outside the classroom—and offers best practices to mitigate out-of-school barriers to in-school learning. Furthermore, the 5HHR is consistent with ESSA’s emphasis on non-cognitive factors and a well-rounded education.
