Can You See Me? Black Trans*gender Women and Femme's Experiences With/in Higher Education

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

In the growing body of literature about trans*gender students, staff, and faculty, little explicit attention has been directed toward Black trans*gender women and femmes. This research seeks to learn from Black trans*gender women and femmes about their specific educational experiences, both in and beyond the academy. This study will engage portraiture to avoid imposing any researcher parameters on how the collaborators show up to the research. The collaborators will not only participate in the research, they will design and direct it alongside the portraitist/researcher. Ultimately, a clear and convincing portrait of the educational lives of Black trans* women and femmes will emerge. This is a crucial understanding in order to approach less trans* antagonist educational spaces and futures.
