The use of simulation for instruction in veterinary education is increasing; however, the effectiveness remains unclear. This meta-analysis and systematic review sought to synthesize the evidence to guide the development of future simulation-based resources and research in veterinary education. A systematic search identified 416 potential manuscripts from which 60 articles were included after application of inclusion criteria. Information was extracted from 71 independent experiments. The overall weighted mean effect size was g = 0.33 and 0.49 for the fixed and mixed effects models, respectively. All outcome measures of knowledge and clinical skills produced statistically significant mean effect sizes favoring simulation (d = 0.35–0.79). A moderator analysis was conducted to determine the conditioning effect of variables on simulation training.
