Reuniting With Ourselves Through STEM: Perspectives of Afro-Brazilian and African American Women in STEM

Abstract

Globally, Black women have negotiated their intersectional identities as they work to be their authentic selves while navigating the world around them. This paper explores the experiences of two women- one Afro-Brazilian and one African American- to understand the ways in which STEM spaces have influenced their identities as STEM scholars. Data was derived through intentional and unintentional theorizing the women did regarding their STEM experiences as Black women who migrated in pursuit of educational opportunities related to their STEM identities. We argue that this work may be transformative and informative for stakeholders and practitioners of education when considering STEM learning environment design.
