"Aquí Se Acabo el Compadrazgo": Tensions in Family-Centered Equitable Collaborations for Educational Equity

Abstract

Informed by transformational resistance and cultural-historical activity theory, this qualitative case study explores how tension and conflict unfolds, influences, and may help strengthen collaborative learning spaces between nondominant families and nonprofit educational equity organizations. Collaborative spaces that bring together nondominant families and nonprofit educational equity organization often adopt educational organizing principles as an underlying framework to improve educational outcomes and attain better life outcomes within nondominant communities of color. This study examines the factors and conditions that fuel tensions, explain how the tensions play out, and more importantly, how tensions may reinforce or help interrupt asymmetrical power relations between nondominant families and nonprofit educational equity organizations.
