Listening to Learners: Emerging Insights Into Workplace-Sponsored Learning

Abstract

This study examines factors that motivate frontline service workers to engage in workplace sponsored education programs and identifies barriers that inhibit participation. Research questions address who these workers are and types of learning opportunities offered to them. Findings suggest that working learners engage in learning when opportunities match their larger life goals. As such, opportunities offered need to be seen as part of a learning trajectory rather than standing alone. It is also important to understand that front-line service workers may be engaged in learning that is hidden from employers or educators because they are using resources and time outside the purview of work and classroom settings.
