Understanding the Undercounting of American Indian and Alaska Native Students: Testing Plausible Hypotheses

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Undercounting of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students is a challenge that must be overcome if the needs of this disaggregated group of students are to be addressed. There are several indications that systematic undercounts of AI/AN students are an issue, and that these undercounts result in loss of important resources. Four hypotheses are proposed and tested to increase understanding of how and why these undercounts occur. Mixed methodologies were used to analyze extant data sets in combination with qualitative data from structured and unstructured interviews, listening sessions and needs assessment activities. Recommendations for changes in policy and practice are suggested.
