Ethnic Studies and Public Scholarship: The Co-Creation of K–12 Curriculum Using University-Based Archival Materials

Sat, April 18, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Addressing the relative lack of representation of Asian American perspectives, narratives, and histories in the teaching of K-12 Social Studies, this study brings together scholars from Asian American Studies, Teacher Education, and Library and Information Studies to make archival materials accessible to K-12 teachers, engage in teacher professional development and collaboration meetings, and study the implementation of lesson plans on topics in Asian American Studies (specifically, Japanese American Incarceration/Internment during WWII and the life of Yuri Kochiyama) generated by K-12 teacher participants. Through careful and intentional moves to make archival materials accessible and relevant to teachers and students and then soliciting feedback from teachers, researchers committed to public scholarship improve the connection between their work and K-12 settings.
