Examining Connections Between Positive Affect and Discourse in a Global, STEM-Focused Digital Makerspace Community

Abstract

This paper utilizes a multimodal analysis to examine connections between positive affect and discourse in an informal, virtual collaborative learning context. During an online meeting, Kenyan and U.S. participants were visually analyzed for positive affect, while their transcribed dialogue was coded for six cognitive and social constructs. Epistemic network analysis (ENA) was used in order to identify meaningful connections between the affect and discourse constructs. All participants responded positively when included in the conversational discourse; U.S. participants demonstrated positive affect when presenting information about a topic of their interest. While limited at this preliminary stage, this multimodal analysis allows us to incorporate each participant’s affect regardless of who is the speaker in the dialogue.
