High School Academic and Social Preparedness for First-Generation (Gen1) and Continuing-Generation (CGen) University Students

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

The present study surveyed a sample of N = 286 undergraduates at the University of Washington in Spring 2019 to understand disparities among first-generation (Gen1) students and their continuing-generation (CGen) peers in terms of demographics, high school experiences, and their decision to enroll at the university. Data was collected using a novel online survey using snowball sampling. Preliminary results show that, compared to CGen students, Gen1 students were less likely to be White, more likely to be Latinx, and less likely factor in geography, university prestige, or campus visit experience when deciding to attend the university. No other differences were detected. Final analyses will also present findings on moderators of Gen1 effects, including race and gender.
