Gentrification and High School Mathematics Course-Taking for Latino Students

Sat, April 18, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Gentrification has created a movement of middle-class students into poor communities and has the potential to change the demographics of schools in these areas as well. Using a unique student-level panel dataset consisting of student data from the restricted access High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 merged with data from the School Attendance Boundary Survey, the relationship between gentrification and mathematics course taking in Latino high school students is examined using multi-level models. Classroom demographics were considered as an explanation for any relationships between gentrification and mathematics course taking of Latino high school students. Also examined was whether gender and family structure moderated this relationship. Results indicate that there is a negative relationship between gentrification and Latino mathematics course taking.
