This study investigated contextual factors in adolescent verbal deception from the perspective of speech act theory. Canadian and Chinese adolescents reported behavioral intentions regarding either lying for, or telling the truth against, their friend or country and justified these intentions. Canadian adolescents were inclined to lie to protect their friends over their country and to tell an exposing truth against their country. In contrast, Chinese adolescents did not differentiate between their intentions to lie for or tell the truth against a compatriot or a friend. Teachers, youth workers, parents, and youths themselves can benefit from understanding the importance of contextual factors on youths’ deceptive and honest speech acts.
