Tablet Use at Home for Schoolwork and Reading Achievement: A Comparative Study on the United States and Finland Using PIRLS 2016 Results

Abstract

In this study, we aimed to examine whether tablet use at home was associated with reading achievement among fourth-grade students in the U.S and Finland, which has been touted as having one of the best education systems in the world (Berliner & Glass, 2014; Yle, 2018) that the U.S. attempts to adopt (Dickinson, 2019). To accomplish the purpose of the study, we conducted a quantitative analysis on the effects of tablet use at home on reading achievement of fourth-grade students in the U.S and Finland who participated in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2016. The PIRLS 2016 results indicated that the U.S. and Finland were located among the high-performing countries.
