Safe Spaces and Sense-Making: University Safe Spaces for LGBTQ and Undocumented Students

Abstract

This paper considers two case studies on how “safe spaces” are supported or denied within two college campuses in California. The paper uses a sensemaking lens to analyze the ways in which safe spaces were supported, or not. Relying on Yin’s comparative case study method, the paper considers two cases. One case focuses on the development and later dismantling of a safe space program for LGBTQ students and faculty. The other case recounts the story of the development of a safe space for undocumented students as a grass-roots efforts of faculty and staff. These cases take place at different private universities in California, where LGBTQ and undocumented student spaces are widely adopted in colleges throughout the state.
