Yoga, Engaged Pedagogy, and the Process of Becoming: Explorations of a Socially Just Yoga Intervention

Sat, April 18, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This paper explores the commonalities between yoga philosophy as outlined in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and the educational theories of Paolo Freire and J. Krishnamurti. This theoretical approach lends structure to a yoga intervention program designed and implemented by the researcher and a high school social science teacher. The qualitative study of this program in a socially just freshman social science course discloses the ways that yoga (both the physical and meditation practices) can lead to student self-awareness in the service of personal transformation.
