Responding to Demographic Transformación in an Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution: The Role of Academic Supports on Latinx Student Success

Abstract

Universities are responding to the demographic transformación that has altered student support services to be more responsive in offering culturally responsive, value added approaches to student academic supports. This paper explores the impact of the Summer Bridge program on Latinx first-generation students at an emerging Research I HSI. Individual interviews among first-generation Latinx students (n=20), conducted for this qualitative study expands our knowledge of the Latinx student experience in an emerging HSI. Initial findings suggest that Summer Bridge plays a critical role in first year academic success as measured by GPA, persistence within the undergraduate major, academic identity development and sustained peer networks among program participants.
