As teacher educators who sought to help our pre-service teachers and teacher leaders go beyond knowledge transmission to cultivating the whole student, we employed self-study methodology to explore how we can better embody Daisaku Ikeda’s conception of human education in our classes. We share classroom vignettes to highlight the way our collaborative critical inquiry led us to think more deeply and explicitly about our practices to cultivate intellect in the service of wisdom, emotions in acts of compassion, and will in the courage to embrace diversity. This study contributes to the emerging field of Ikeda/Soka studies, as well as to the larger field of curriculum studies and self-study of teaching. It can also inform teacher praxis at all levels.
