Digitally Networked During a Global Time of Disquiet: Critical Media Literacy for the Public Good

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

This paper documents the crucial need for competent and widespread integration of a Freirean critical media literacy in education. In an era of global digitally networked society exposed to threats from invasion of digital privacy, fake news and manufactured misinformation/disinformation, critical media literacy (nationally and internationally) is of paramount importance for survival of a viable democracy and for the public good. In this time of disquiet, a time of restlessness and uncertainty everywhere present, with manufactured crises from the individual to the global scale, critical media literacy is the only hope in order to develop an understanding of what is happening in the rapidly changing and evolving digitally networked global society.
