Te Pikopiko: Uplifting the Well-Being of an Indigenous Community Through a Community-Based Research Institute

Abstract

This study documents interviews with three Te Pikopiko primary researchers and two Ngāti Hineuru elders about the conceptualization, conduct, and dissemination of iwi-based research as guided by the principles of Kaupapa Māori. The researchers view this as a critical stage in the planning of all Ngāti Hineuru-based research projects because, given the devastating history of the iwi (as described above), it is important to ask specific questions to tease out the power structures in research projects pertaining to the iwi.
