"It's Easy to Feel Alone": Case Studies of Latinx High School Juniors' Pathways to College

Abstract

This qualitative study examined 12 (6 females, 6 males) narrative case studies of Latinx college and career aspiration development and self-perception as juniors in high school. Using the Bridging Multiple Worlds and the Model for Diverse Learning Environment frameworks, this study investigated the challenges and resources the students encounter while preparing for college. A triangulation analysis of the informants’ semi-structured interviews, facilitation prompts and academic records, data was thematically coded and compared across informants. Two major themes will be discussed: 1 Latinx students have high college and career aspirations, but lack guidance. 2. The informants’ diligently prepared for college admissions and it negatively affected their self-perception, yet it empowered them.
