Teachers' Perceptions of Social Emotional Learning, Mindfulness, and Burnout, Following Participation in a Postgraduate Course on Emotions

Tue, April 21, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This paper presents a subset of findings from a study of postgraduate students on their perceptions of improvements in their personal social emotional learning (SEL), burnout and mindfulness, as life-enhancing individual outcomes from their participation in a university postgraduate level course on understanding emotions. The research investigated 1) whether any changes would be evident in the participants’ measures after participating in the reflective activities on the course and 2) how participants interpreted these changes. Given the absence of mindfulness as a specific course topic, it was interesting to see the consensus from participants on the role of their EI improvement in improving their mindfulness scores. Detailed findings will be presented and implications for teaching and research will be discussed.
