This paper reviews the literature concerning the impacts of emotions on the cognitive process in order to provide evidence for a needed expansion to current theoretical models of affective cognition. The proposed Applied Model of Affective Cognition includes previously overlooked impacts on pre-attentive vision and long-term memory retrieval, while also providing evidence for the specific outcomes of utilizing emotional arousal and valence across all aspects of cognition. Finally, the proposed model places an emphasis on the effect sizes and causal direction of these effects found in the literature in order to provide a model that can inform a more targeted emotional design of educational multimedia.
