Academic and Nonacademic High School Indicators of College Readiness and Community College Success: Differential Effects for Underserved Groups

Abstract

This study uses nationally representative and longitudinal data to examine the predictive validity of each of the five dimensions of college readiness and test whether their associations with college freshmen outcomes are consistent for students from educationally underserved groups (EUG--Black and Latino students) compared with others. College readiness outcomes included college freshmen GPA, the number of remedial courses taken, and the number of credit-bearing units accumulated. The results show Academic Preparedness is the strongest predictor of each of the three freshmen outcomes. However, it is significantly less predictive for students from EUG.
