Augmenting Local Understanding Through Technologies: A Systematic Review of Place-Based Learning With Mobile Technologies

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The development of mobile technologies provides tools of learning through the place with recognized advantages. However, less has been discussed regarding design considerations for use of technologies and challenges and obstacles that emerged from the current application of mobile technologies to place-based learning. In this systematic review, we collected 30 studies from peer-reviewed articles that were published between 2007-2019. By employing qualitative content analysis methods, we identified themes around the characteristics, roles, and research gaps discussed in these studies. Results of the study revealed design insights from the current practice of designing technology enhanced place-based learning and thus formed a deeper understanding of the relationship between learner, place and technologies.
