Exploring the Relationship Between Theory of Mind and Cognitive Literary Theory: A Conceptual Approach

Abstract

Cognitive Literary Theory (CLT) and, the developmental process, Theory of Mind (ToM) both center upon the concept that human beings recognize and respond to the expressed and implied beliefs of others. Yet, ToM being a cognitive theory, with developmental age ranges, has been empirically proven—albeit debate exists, and maintains applicability not generally shared by CLT. However, a review of CLT literature implies it is a process of ToM applied to written works, were beliefs are shared with readers and may thus have a like effect on mental states and beliefs. This conceptual study intends to understand the supposed overlap as it may improve the manners in which text-or-reading based literacy is sought and appraised in K-12 schools.
