Implementation Patterns in a Large-Scale 1:1 Initiative: Common Early Features of iPad Classrooms

Abstract

This paper investigates the early adoption of iPads in a 1:1 environment across an initiative that serves 114 schools in diverse high-poverty settings. We describe common features of the iPad classroom after approximately 1 year of implementation to shed light on instructional changes that are more or less likely to appear first. The research finds that a number of impactful features of an engaging LEARNING ENVIRONMENT are commonplace across classrooms, including immediate access to information, new classroom participation structures, and extensive product creation, but that deeper changes to LEARNING ACTIVITIES are likely to require not only additional time but also deliberate ongoing support.
