In order to understand arts equity and inequity, it is important to consider how particular purposes of art education influence the nature of the burgeoning artist identities of young artists and whether these artist identities serve to maintain or disrupt the status quo. Through inquiry using portraiture methodology and social practice theory into the contexts, narrative and activity-based practices, and consequences of artist-identity work among youth, this paper examines: the multidimensionality of arts education equity, institutional sites of art education and in/equity, and artist identity formation as an embodied, racialized, sociocultural process.
