Latinx Medical Applicant Admissions Trends in a Competitive Medical School Campus

Abstract

The latest 2018-2019 admissions cycle reveals the low number of Latinx medical school applicants as 9.6% of total 52,757 applicants (AAMC, 2019). Research has proven that students from underrepresented backgrounds are more likely to work as a physician in underserved communities, such as urban and rural communities (Mitchell & Lassiter, 2006). As the United States population becomes more diverse, the need for culturally competent physicians grows in the United States. Thus, a closer examination of the Latinx medical school students is needed to understand the competitive Latinx medical student pool. This study reviews admissions data from a highly competitive medical school campus to review Latinx admissions and MMI trends.
