The study explores the intricate relationship between motivation and cognitive engagement in the online language environment, with a particular focus on the vocabulary learning strategies. To capture the event-based motivation status and learning strategies, experience sampling methodology (ESM) is used to identify the changing pattern of motivation and investigate the corresponding cognitive engagement throughout the learning periods. The results depicted dynamic connections among motivational constructs and learning strategies across time. It also provided insights and implications for instructors from a motivational support perspective to increase students’ strategy use and to better design and facilitate future online courses.
