Race, Immigration, and Educational Equity in the New Latino South

Abstract

Recently emerging as the United States’ largest ethnic-minority group, Latinos are changing American social institutions and sparking conversations about equity and justice within a multi-ethnic society. Nowhere have these changes been more apparent than the U.S. education system—an institution responsible for educating all children. Research suggests that demographic transformations within schools are a catalyst for conflict surrounding education policies given that educators are tasked with addressing the needs of newcomers while also managing the competing demands of historically underserved and traditionally advantaged populations. This study uses an embedded case study design to examine how ethno-racial demographic change complicates the quest for equity in educational policy and practice in a historically black, Title I school in a new immigrant destination.
