Na Mo‘olelo (Stories) of Native Hawaiian Engineering Professors

Abstract

In this qualitative case study, we examine na mo‘olelo or stories of four NH engineering professors, two of whom are current professors of engineering and two who are former professors of engineering. We extrapolate the characteristics of their experiences that enabled them to succeed in a field where Native Hawaiian represent less than 1.4 % of the workforce. We identify presence of cognitive, motivational, affective, and selection processes; and agency through goal representation and anticipated outcomes. Possible additional themes will be noted also.
