Who Are We Listening to and How? Uses of Autophotography to Disrupt Deficit Orientations

Fri, April 17, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

How does the use of visual images augment our understanding of our students’ stories? This research project centers the autophotographic method in two distinct populations: pre-service teachers and secondary youth. Through examinations of photos and films, autophotography serves as a mechanism to use visual images where words fail. Both tiers of our project suggest that autophotography promotes acts of humanity and encourages people to literally view the world and one’s experiences through the lens of another. As such, deficit orientations are diffused.
