Moving Beyond Access: Supporting the Successful Completion of First-Generation, Low-Income, Latinx Graduate Students

Abstract

With increasing numbers of first-generation, low-income, students of color entering graduate education, little is known about this student experience. This multi-methods study examines a graduate fellowship program in a large, comprehensive university in the southwestern U.S. Initial quantitative findings reflect disparities based on race/ethnicity, first-generation and low-income status. At the same time, Latinx, first-generation, low-income student experiences appear to indicate that the program elements may be successfully ameliorating a number of the institutional conditions which create those disparities.
