Few studies on the recruitment and retention of teachers and administrators of color center race (Stumbo, Hill, and Lewis, 2016), and even fewer studies include exploration around the retention of administrators of color. This conceptual paper is the next step in a previous study that stemmed from a university-community partnership, supported by an AERA Research Grant designed to help study schools in predominantly white and rural states efforts in attracting and retaining educators and administrators of color. This paper addresses limitations identified in that previous study by adding the conceptualization of “place” to the previous theoretical framework; examining the ways the previous study suffered from the black-white binary; and investigating what we know about why administrators of color leave.
