Review of Norms Affecting Parenting in Chinese Families and Implication on Educating Children With Autism

Abstract

The paper summarizes some major norms on parenting in Chinese families and reveals their implications towards educating children with autism. The author categorizes Chinese norms on parenting into four dimensions: accountability, goal, content and method. Chinese parents play a dominant role in parenting (authoritarian parenting style) and cares children's development in moral, academic, personality aspects.The traditional norms which affect parents most are Confucianism, Taoism and Legalism. The author finds that tradition norms are sometimes conflict with principles of applied behavior analysis and inclusive education. However, some norms are valuable as reminder to parents in early diagnosis and intervention.
