Abstract

The study explores the complicated relationship between college choice and the choice of high school in globalizing circumstances. Drawing from the semi-structured interviews of 9 Chinese families who sent their children to emerging international high school programs in China for US college admissions, this paper examines how the rising Chinese upper-middle class’ educational choices are influenced by their desire for elite education and neoliberal globalization. The study concludes with a discussion of the implications of emergent international pathways to US colleges and privileged Chinese families’ choice of these alternative pathway to elite education.
