Examining a Zone of Proximal Self Framework in a Computer Science Student Success Program

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This study introduces a framework called the zone of proximal self (ZPS) (i.e., the distance from an individual’s current to potential self with assistance from capable mentors or peers). ZPS shifts mentors’ and students’ thinking from an individualist meritocracy mindset of self development, towards one that frames development within different zones: (1) the zone of an individual’s current self and what they can achieve on their own and (2) the zone of proximal self including the widened possibilities and opportunities the individual can reach with the social support of others. Applying design-based research approaches on a Computer Science student success program at a R-1 public university, this study found how interpersonal validation strategies increased students’ academic performance and belonging.
